Amos 5:18-27
Read Amos 5:18-27
Helpful Background Information:
The prophet Amos wrote this book to warn the northern kingdom of Israel about the disaster that would reach them because of their sins that they committed against God. In this section, God spoke to Amos about Israel’s misunderstanding of the Day of the Lord, which includes His judgement. On this day, God will not judge based on people group, but will judge based on faith. The day of God’s judgement will be terrible for those whose names are not written in the book of life.
The religious festivals and assemblies mentioned in verse 21 are referencing the way that the people of Israel were making themselves look good on the outside. They did all of the right actions of worship, but their hearts did not reflect God’s. God wanted His people to love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength, as said in Deuteronomy 6:4-6. The Israelite people did not do this, instead they worshipped other gods and presented hollow worship to God.
The exile referenced in verse 27 is referring to God’s judgement to send the people of Israel into captivity. This was done by Assyria, as God’s judgement in 722 BC, during the reign of King Hoshea, as described in 2 Kings 18:9-11.
