2 Corinthians 3:7-18

Read 2 Corinthians 3:7-18

Helpful Background Information:

  • In this passage, Paul compares the eternal glory of the new covenant to the old covenant’s temporary glory, which has been far surpassed through Jesus. To compare this, he references Exodus 34, where Moses’ face glowed after being in the presence of the Lord, and he wore a veil to ease the Israelites' fears and so they did not see the glory fade away and lose faith.

  • The Old Covenant glory was temporary; the shining of Moses’ face was destined to fade, just as the Law he proclaimed. Paul proclaims the superior, unfading glory of the New Covenant which will always remain and brings life and righteousness through the Spirit.

  • Verse 16 says that anyone who turns to the Lord will then have their veil taken away. Believers in Christ have unveiled faces which will behold the glory of God in Christ and shine His light forever as we are being transformed more and more into his likeness. This light never fades, because it is from the everlasting Spirit of the Lord who lives in and through you.

Reflection Questions:

  • When people interact with you, do they see the glory of the Lord shining through you? In what ways can you actively reflect the glory of God in your daily life (and interactions with others), as opposed to the fading glory seen in Moses' time? What role does the Spirit play in this?

  • In what ways do you still try to lean on the old covenant law rather than embracing the freedoms of the new covenant? How does the temporary nature of the Old Covenant's glory encourage you to focus on the eternal promises of the New Covenant?

  • Make a list of those you know who have a veiled face to the truth of the gospel. How can you help others who may still have a "veil" over their hearts to see the truth of the Gospel? Shine His light to them, praying that God will remove their veil so that they can see the glory of God and be transformed by His Spirit, too.
