Day 9: Matthew 6:25-33
Read Matthew 6:25-33
Helpful Background Information:
This comes right after the passage where Jesus gives the encouraging command to not lay up treasures on earth but instead let our treasures be laid up in heaven (Matt. 6:19-20). Jesus’s flow of thought seems to flow right from that into our passage.
It must be pointed out how plainly we can read this in our context and it be so applicable. O how often do we get anxious about our own lives and the things that happen day to day (6:25).
Reflection Questions:
What are you anxious about today? (Don’t fly through this question, take a minute to write down a list).
How does Jesus’s teaching and command help encourage you and reorient your thinking?
Some may misinterpret this passage to think that Jesus does not care at all about the physical and think He only cares about the spiritual. Yet He clearly cares about the physical, right? Think about, for example, when He heals the paralytic in Mark 2:1-12. The paralytic comes to get healed, Jesus heals both the man’s physical ailment, and forgives the man of his sin because of his faith. Jesus cares about both the spiritual and the physical. With this in mind: How do we follow Jesus’ example in valuing the physical, without falling into the anxiety He warns us against in this passage?
Think about areas of your life where you do well in getting Jesus involved and areas you struggle to get Him involved (a list may be helpful here too). What does it look like practically for you to live out Matthew 6:33 in ALL areas of your life?
