Day 8: 2 Kings 22:8-20

Read 2 Kings 22:8-20

Helpful Background Information:

  • Tearing clothes is a sign of deep sorrow and anguish. King Josiah does this when he is made aware of the wretched state of himself and the people he leads—in light of the reading of God’s Law.

Reflection Questions:

  • King Josiah is read God’s Law and it convicts his heart to a point of deep sorrow over the sin he has committed and also his people have committed. When you read God’s Word, do you often reflect on your own shortcomings or point your finger at the shortcomings of others?

  • After being deeply convicted, King Josiah is moved to immediate action to turn to the Lord for help. How do you respond to the Holy Spirit’s conviction? Do you flea … procrastinate … reject … or repent and obey the Lord? Where in your life do you see a procrastination/rejection of obedience, and how can you change this today?

  • Notice the Lord says He shows King Josiah grace not because he was a good man, but rather God points to the state of Josiah’s heart: which displayed humility and Godly sorrow over his sin. We often are too comfortable with the sin in our lives; growing calloused to it. Go to the Lord in prayer and ask Him to help you process two things: 1) Are there areas of sin in your life that you are blind to? And 2) What are areas of sin in your life that you are calloused to?
