Day 6: Mark 1:39-45

Read Mark 1:39-45

Helpful Background Information:

  • In Mark 1:39–45, Jesus continues His ministry throughout Galilee; he’s preaching in synagogues, healing people,  and casting out demons. Then, a man with leprosy approaches Him. Lepers were considered “unclean” and were required to live outside the community, cut off from normal relationships, worship, and human touch. This man breaks all the social rules by coming near Jesus and asking to be healed. Moved with compassion, Jesus doesn’t just heal him; He touches him. Under normal circumstances, Jesus would have been made “unclean” and be at risk of catching the flesh-eating disease. However, instead of Jesus becoming unclean, the man becomes clean.

  • Even though Jesus is busy and sought-after, He slows down for this one man. He gives attention to someone others ignored. Jesus was constantly surrounded by urgent needs, yet He never let the crowd's demands determine His pace. He had space in His life for interruptions and that space created room for compassion.

Reflection Questions:

  • What stands out to you about Jesus’ response to the man with leprosy? How does this challenge the way you respond when someone interrupts your plans?

  • Jesus didn’t let the urgency of the crowds dictate His schedule. What do you think helped Him stay grounded and focused?

  • What would it look like to create a margin in your life this week, a space that isn’t filled with activity or noise but open to God's leading and the needs of others?
