2 Corinthians 1:21-22
Read 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
Helpful Background Information:
Paul is writing to the Corinthian church who was experiencing a lot of inner strife. Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to resolve the disagreements, restore unity to the congregation, and reestablish his role as leader.
In Scripture, anointing signifies being set apart and empowered for divine purpose. The anointing recalls the consecration of Israel’s kings and priests (OT), while finding its fullness in Jesus Christ, who was anointed by the Spirit for His saving mission (NT). Those united with Christ share in the Spirit’s presence and are equipped to belong to God, bear witness to Christ, and persevere in the calling He gives.
The Holy Spirit assures us of our identity, empowers daily living, and serves as God’s binding guarantee (down payment) that He will finish what He started. Our present possession of the indwelling Spirit is proof that an eternal, glorious future is not just promised but also secured. In the ancient world, a ruler’s seal authenticated what belonged to him and carried his authority. God’s seal declares that those redeemed by Christ have been set apart for Him and remain under His sovereign care.
Reflection Questions:
Believers are established and sealed in God alone, not on their own works. Christ is the firm foundation that overcomes all human weakness, suffering, and changing circumstances. What are you tempted to “establish” yourself/”stand firm” on your own strength rather than in Christ? What other things are competing in hopes of claiming ownership over you?
When you feel anxious about the future, how can remembering God’s "down payment" give you confidence about what is to come?
The anointing of the Spirit carries both privilege and responsibility. It is a privilege because we have direct access to God’s presence (Hebrews 10:19-22). It is a responsibility because we are empowered to witness, love, and persevere in truth (Ephesians 2:10; 2 Timothy 1:7). How do you take advantage (both good and bad) of this anointing? Ask the Lord to renew zeal in you to live more aware of His presence within you–you have the same Spirit that Jesus lived from and through–live like it!
