1 John 2:12-17

Helpful Background Information: 

• John is writing this section of Scripture to Christians to instruct them on how to live. John instructs these Christians to live in unity and in love for God and not for the world. 

• John wrote verses 12-14 as a poem about who Christians are in their varying stages of sanctification. Therefore, referring to children, fathers, and young men does not mean that these verses are only applicable to people who literally fit these categories. Let these verses encourage you no matter your age, stage, or gender. 

• The world referred to in this context means the state of fallen humanity and our active hostility towards Him. When John writes about the world here, he is not talking about the physical planet, but humanity and its state as being under the dominion of the devil. 

Reflection Questions: 

• Verses 12-14 display John’s reassurance for believers, as they are forgiven, maintain a relationship with God, have defeated evil, and possess strength through God’s Word. How can you live differently because of each one of these truths?

• How have you seen how the world has taken you captive to the list given in verse 16? Why can’t Christians love these things and God at the same time?

• What has God done to love you and meet you when you were still in love with the world and not Him? How can you thank Him for meeting you in that place? Who can you tell about these things?
