Read Isaiah 36-39

Helpful Background Information:

• There are three main accounts of Hezekiah’s life in Scripture. One is found in the primary text for this week—2 Kings 18-20. Another can be found in the book of Isaiah. 

• Since the prophet Isaiah was an advisor to Hezekiah, his book is mostly made up of historical material. The emphasis is on the fact that political effort and military power are unable to function as the nation’s source of security. While Hezekiah responded faithfully to the LORD when threatened by the Assyrians (chapters 36-37), he acted foolishly toward the Babylonians (chapter 39). 

• In these chapters, we see Hezekiah at his best and at his worst. From beginning to end, his decisions demonstrate that even great men have their faults, and that God uses us best when we humbly depend on Him.
  

Reflection Questions: 

• Hezekiah displayed both strong faith and significant failure at certain times in his life. How does his story challenge the tendency to define people by either their greatest successes or their greatest mistakes?

• The greatest difference between Hezekiah's best and worst moments throughout his life was where he placed his confidence. What habits can help you remain humble and dependent on God over the long haul?

• Isaiah's ministry during Hezekiah's reign looks forward to the coming Messiah. How does the contrast between Hezekiah and Jesus highlight the difference between a good king and the perfect King?
