1 Kings 16:30-33

Read 1 Kings 16:30-33

Helpful Background Information:

  • The life of Jehoshaphat was marked mainly by his positive spiritual reforms and leadership efforts but also by his unfortunate alliances with King Ahab of Israel. This passage in 1 Kings details just how wicked King Ahab was, which shows us why making an alliance with him was a big deal in the LORD’s eyes.

  • Ahab’s rule is introduced to us with the evaluation that says, “Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him” (1 Kings 16:30). It says that he treated sin as if it were a trivial thing—marrying the infamous Jezebel, building a temple to Baal, and putting up an Asherah pole knowing full well that it would provoke God’s anger.

  • Considering Ahab’s state-sponsored idolatry and his persecution of God’s prophets, alignment with him was thoroughly incompatible with obedience to God. Just because a course of action seems politically expedient or economically promising, God’s people do not have a license to compromise with evil. God is more than able to do what He wants to do without His people colluding with corrupted powers.

Reflection Questions:

  • Jehoshaphat was generally a faithful king, yet he made unwise alliances with Ahab. What does this teach us about the reality that even mature believers can have significant blind spots?

  • God’s people are often tempted to trust worldly power, wealth, or influence to accomplish what only God can ultimately accomplish. What “Ahab-like” sources of security are you tempted to rely on instead of God?

  • God does not need His people to compromise with evil in order to fulfill His purposes. Where might fear or impatience be tempting you to take matters into your own hands rather than trusting God?

  • Unlike Jehoshaphat, Jesus never compromised with sin in order to gain power or acceptance. How does Christ’s perfect faithfulness provide hope to you today?
