Read 2 Chronicles 17:3-11
Helpful Background Information:
In 2 Chronicles 17, we’re told that after King Jehoshaphat rose to the throne of Judah, he launched a large-scale spiritual, educational, and military reformation. The chapter describes his reign as a highly successful one, detailing how his obedience to God contributed to the peace and prosperity of the nation as a whole.
Among the many notable things Jehoshaphat did, one of the most significant was the priority he placed on educating citizens in the ways of the Law of the LORD (vv.7-9). Not only did he remove pagan high places and Asherah poles (v.6), but he also restored proper worship by giving people training in God’s Word. This was such a high priority for Jehoshaphat that he actually sent teachers directly to the people to make it as accessible as possible.
Reflection Questions:
Jehoshaphat recognized that true reform required more than removing idols—it required teaching people God’s Word. What does this reveal about the importance of knowing Scripture as a foundation for lasting spiritual growth?
External changes are often temporary without internal transformation. Are there areas where you have focused more on changing your behavior than allowing God’s truth to reshape your heart?
The reforms under Jehoshaphat could instruct people in God’s commands, but they could not give people new hearts. How does this increase your appreciation for the new covenant promise fulfilled through Christ?
Jehoshaphat sent teachers to meet people where they were rather than expecting everyone to come to him. How might God be calling the church today to make His truth more accessible to those who need it?
