Helpful Background Information: 

• The mention of Ahasuerus in the book of Ezra helps us better understand what all was going on in the days when the story of Esther took place, since we’re told that he was the one ruling the Persian Empire during her life (Esther 1:1). Ezra also helps us understand that Ahaseurus was also known more widely by the name of Xerxes (who ruled Persia in the early 5th century BC), and that opens up a much larger amount of historical information about his life. 

• Ezra chapter 4 paints a picture of a Persian administration that was constantly being petitioned by enemies of the Jewish people. This was a point in history when many people wanted the Jews gone, causing them to come up with all kinds of accusations against them. It really highlights the seriousness of the threat that Mordecai, Esther, and the rest of the Jewish people were facing, given that this was not an isolated incident but a part of a broader struggle for survival.

• This context also prepares us to better understand Ahasuerus’ behavior in the book of Esther, as he’s consistently presented as a ruler who is susceptible to political manipulation. It’s no surprise, then, why the wicked man named Haman was so easily able to influence Ahasuerus to issue an irrevocable decree to destroy the Jews in Esther’s day.

• The Jewish people lived under the constant threat of opposition and hostility. How does knowing the broader context of Esther deepen your appreciation for God’s preservation of His people?

• Ahasuerus was a powerful ruler, yet he was easily influenced by those around him. What does this reveal about the dangers of leadership that lacks wisdom, discernment, or conviction?

• Against seemingly impossible odds, God protected and preserved His people in Esther’s day. What hope might that offer when the Church faces opposition today? Reread the promise of Jesus in Matthew 16:18 for encouragement.
