Esther 4

Read Esther 4

Helpful Background Information:

  • The book of Esther is unusual because God is never directly mentioned but even so, God’s hand is evident throughout her story.

  • Esther takes place during the Persian Empire, after many Jews had been exiled from their homeland. Esther is a Jewish woman who has become queen, but almost no one knows she is Jewish.

  • Before chapter 4, a powerful official named Haman becomes furious because Mordecai, Esther’s cousin, refuses to bow to him. Haman responds by plotting to destroy all the Jews in the empire. The king agrees and signs the decree. In Esther 4, Mordecai mourns publicly and tells Esther she must go to the king and plead for her people. But this is dangerous because anyone who approaches the king without being invited could be killed.

  • The issue at stake is whether Esther will stay silent to protect herself or risk her life to help her people.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where do you see fear shaping Esther’s decision in this chapter? What is the difference between being wise and being cowardly?

  • How might God use your current relationships, position, or influence for His purposes?

  • What would faithful courage look like for you this week?
