John 17:1-19

Read John 17:1-19

Helpful Background Information:

  • In our sermon passage for the week, Jesus proclaims a comforting aspect of his purpose in coming to Earth: “A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance” (John 10:10, CSB). What does it mean to have life in abundance? Jesus elaborates more on this in our passage for today: John 17:1-9

  • Our passage is often referred to as Jesus’s High Priestly Prayer, as Jesus is going before the Father and interceding for his disciples - not only those present with him in earthly ministry, but for all of those throughout history who are his followers. To the Christian reading this little devo, Jesus is praying for you in this passage!

  • Jesus, in verse 3, declares what it means to have an abundant life: an abundant life is the eternal life which comes by knowing the only true God through Jesus Christ. This life is filled with receiving the words of Christ (v.8), glorifying Christ (v.10), being protected by God (v.11), guarded by Christ from temptation and falling away (v.12), having complete joy (v.13), and being sanctified by the truth (v.17). Put another way, the Christian life is the beautiful life. It’s a life that walks closely with God, relies solely on God’s grace, and is freed to live in the manner God has designed - according to His Word. This is the abundant life.

Reflection Questions:

  • Jesus defines eternal life as knowing the only true God through Christ (v.3).

  • How would you describe your current experience of “knowing” God—not just knowing about Him?

  • Jesus says He is glorified in His disciples (v.10).

  • What aspect of your life is currently bringing glory to Christ? How can you glorify Christ during this Christmas season?

  • Jesus prays for all those who believe in him in this passage. Indeed, even now he intercedes for his people at the right hand of the Father (See Romans 8:34)

  • How does it comfort you that Christ goes before the Father on your behalf? How does this affect your view of Jesus’ purpose in coming to earth?
