Psalm 23
Read Psalm 23
Helpful Background Information:
As the Good Shepherd, Jesus gives His sheep “life and life to the full” (John 10:10). A picture of what this quality of life looks like can be found in Psalm 23. Even though this Psalm was written long before Jesus walked the earth, it accurately describes how the LORD cares for and tends to His people. Taking some liberty from the original Psalm, it would be perfectly appropriate to insert Jesus’ name in place of “the LORD” along with each of the corresponding pronouns that follow.
Psalm 23 is anchored by three statements that demonstrate the psalmist’s personal trust in the LORD:
“I will not lack” (v.1)
“I will not fear” (v.4)
“I will dwell” (v.6)
On the basis of God’s trustworthy character, the psalmist concludes that God will provide everything he truly needs. Fear fades away under the tender care and protection of this Good Shepherd. Better yet, the writer knows he doesn’t have to dwell alone. Instead, God Himself enters into the picture to lead and guide with His personal presence.
Reflection Questions:
Again, a great deal of vivid imagery is used in this Psalm. Take a few minutes to reread the Psalm, picturing the scenes that are described in each verse. (look up images of green pastures, quiet waters, and dark valleys to prompt your imagination if need be)
Despite real danger, the presence of the shepherd makes all the difference for the psalmist. Are there areas of your life where it’s difficult to experience God as your Shepherd? How so?
Fears begin to fade away under the care of Jesus as Shepherd. Are there any specific fears or worries that you’ve been carrying lately? Close by spending time in prayer and use the words of Psalm 23 as your own.
