John 10:1-18

Read John 10:1-18

Helpful Background Information:

  • In John 10, Jesus teaches by using the imagery of sheep, a shepherd, and a sheepfold. This would have been a familiar picture to everyone listening. Sheep were completely dependent on their shepherd for guidance, protection, and life itself. A true shepherd knew his sheep by name, led them out safely, and defended them from thieves, wild animals, and any danger that came their way. He is the true Shepherd, and God’s people are His sheep.

  • Jesus explains that the difference between Him and every false leader is simple: false shepherds run when danger comes, but the Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. Jesus is pointing forward to the cross, where He would willingly give His life to save us.

Reflection Questions:

  • What “voices” in your life tend to distract you from hearing the Good Shepherd clearly?

  • In verse 10, Jesus says He came to give “abundant life.” What do you think this kind of life looks like, and how is it different from what the world calls abundance?

  • The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. How does Jesus’s sacrifice shape your understanding of His love for you?

  • In verse 16, Jesus speaks of “other sheep” who are not yet in the fold. How does this shape the way you think about mission, evangelism, and people who are far from God?
