Matthew 25:31-46
Read Matthew 25:31-46
Helpful Background Information:
Matthew 25:31–46 is the final section of what’s known as the Olivet Discourse. In chapters 24–25, Jesus speaks about the end of the age, His second coming, and coming judgment. Leading up to this passage, Jesus tells several parables about being ready: the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1–13) emphasizes spiritual preparedness, and the parable of the talents (25:14–30) highlights faithful stewardship of what God has entrusted to us. In verses 31–46, Jesus tells of the time when He returns in glory and judges the nations. (See Revelation 19:11–21)
Jesus pictures himself as a king on a throne, separating people like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. The focus is on how people responded to the needs of “the least of these.” This judgment is not based on earning salvation by good works but rather reveals the fruit of true faith. The reality is this: how we treat others reveals our relationship with Him.
Reflection Questions:
Jesus says that how we treat “the least of these” is a direct reflection of how we treat him. How does that challenge the way you treat people who are poor, lonely, or overlooked?
Who are “the least of these” in your everyday life? If you can’t identify any “least of these” people in your life, why is that?
What keeps you from caring for “the least of these”: fear, busyness, indifference, lack of awareness? How can you love them in a practical way this week?
