Exodus 14
Read Exodus 14; Numbers 20:16
Exodus 14 is the well-known miracle where God parts the Red Sea to free His people from the hand of Pharaoh and Egyptian captivity.
In Numbers 20:16, Moses retells the history of the Exodus, which they experienced together. He testifies that God carried out this miracle on behalf of His people by sending an angel to carry out such work. This is similar to our passage in Daniel 6 (See Exo. 14:19-20, cf. Dan. 6:22).
In this Numbers passage, Moses appeals to the memory of both the Israelites and the Edomites, whose land he was requesting to travel through. This appeal to the Exodus does two things: 1) It shows the Edomites they have common ground, serving the same God; and 2) it reminds the wandering and grumbling Israelites whom he was with of the faithfulness and purposes of the God they serve.
Reflection Questions:
What connections do you see between these passages and Daniel 6?
Why do you think the Israelites struggled to trust God after such a powerful deliverance?
What does this reveal about the human heart? Your heart?
As Moses is recalling God’s faithfulness in the past, he uses the language, “when we cried to the Lord, He heard our voice and sent an angel…” (Num. 20:16). Think about your past … moments you have experienced God’s faithfulness. Recall a moment you called out to Him, and He heard you, and you saw Him act? Write these down.
What comfort does it bring you to know that God hears your prayers and acts on your behalf?
