Philippians 4:15-20

Read Philippians 4:15-20

Helpful Background Information:

  • Paul finishes the book of Philippians by returning once again to their faithfulness. In chapter 1, Paul commends the Philippians for their partnership in the gospel, and now he is acknowledging their support that they have given him freely. The Philippian church clearly cares deeply for Paul and his ministry.

  • This section of scripture mentions how Epaphraditus was the one who carried the gifts from the Philippians. Read Philippians 2:25-30 to better understand who Epaphraditus is and what he did for the sake of Paul and the Philippians.

  • As Paul writes this letter, he makes sure to let the Philippians know that he does not need more from them. In fact, he makes sure to tell them that he is fully supplied. Paul also states his confidence in God supplying for their needs as well in verse 19, suggesting that they were generously giving despite possibly also lacking financially in their own way.

Reflection Questions:

  • The Philippian church cared for Paul in many tangible ways. What are some of the ways that the Philippian church supported Paul in Philippians 1:3-11 and 4:15-20? How can you mimic the Philippian church?

  • What is the point of supporting the ministry of the church and of missions? How does God view giving of both time and resources to His ministry?

  • Trusting God with time and resources for the sake of ministry can be difficult. How can you trust that “God will supply all your needs according to his riches in Glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:19)? What do you need to ask for from the Holy Spirit for this?
