Psalm 138

Helpful Background Information:

• This Psalm is a song of praise, written by David. The psalm begins with praise to the LORD for his steadfast love, then David declaring that all kings will praise the Lord, and ending with David’s confession of trust, theological affirmation and petition to the Lord. 

• In verse 8, David expresses confidence in the LORD to fulfill His purposes. This confidence is not in David’s own circumstances or performance, but in who the LORD is. 

• David does not try to take advantage of God’s steadfast love, but rather he humbly depends on God to keep him and finish his work through him. We can rest assured that God will not abandon the work He has started in our lives, while continually approaching His throne with confidence in expressing our needs and desires to Him.

• David praises God with his "whole heart." What is currently occupying your heart, and how can you shift your focus toward full gratitude today?

• Verse 3 mentions God answering prayer and making the psalmist bold. Think of a specific time God answered your prayer. How did that moment change your inner strength?

• Verse 8 declares, "The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me." What thing are you waiting on the Lord to carry out to completion? Do you struggle to trust God's timeline or plan? What control do you need to surrender to Him today? How can you live confident in the Lord today?
