Mark 15:21-39

Read Mark 15:21-39

Helpful Background Information:

  • As we approach Easter this year, we are going to pause our normal place in the Gospel of Mark and jump ahead to the end of the story. For the next three weeks we will focus on the central events of the Christian faith: the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This week we will look at Jesus’ death (Mark 15:21–39), next week we will consider His burial, and finally we will celebrate His resurrection. These three events are the heart of the gospel message itself (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).

  • In Mark 15:21–39 we see the final moments of Jesus’ life. After being condemned by Pontius Pilate, Jesus is led outside the city of Jerusalem to be crucified, one of the most brutal forms of execution used by the Roman Empire. Along the way, a man named Simon of Cyrene is forced to carry Jesus’ cross. At Golgotha Jesus is nailed to the cross and mocked by soldiers, passersby, and religious leaders. Darkness covers the land for several hours, and before He dies Jesus cries out the opening words of Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” When Jesus finally breathes His last, the curtain of the temple is torn from top to bottom, symbolizing that His death has opened the way for people to have direct access to God.

Reflection Questions:

  • Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” (Mark 15:34). Why do you think Jesus quoted Psalm 22 in this moment?

  • Jesus endured suffering, humiliation, and death for the sake of others. How does reflecting on His sacrifice shape the way you think about your own life and priorities?

  • As we begin this three-week focus on Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, what stands out most to you about the cross? How does it change the way you view God’s love for you?
