Mark 8:31-33; 9:31-32; 10:32-34

Read Mark 8:31-33; 9:31-32; 10:32-34

Helpful Background Information:

  • Throughout the Gospel of Mark, Jesus repeatedly foretells His coming death. Yet each time, the disciples fail to understand what He means. Their reactions reveal this misunderstanding. Peter attempts to rebuke Him. James and John respond with pride, arguing about who will sit at His right hand. None of them grasps the significance of Christ’s deliberate march toward His sacrificial death, nor do they display the humble and reverent response such a revelation demands.

  • This fact makes the woman of Bethany a delightful surprise. As we read in our sermon passage, this poor woman pours out expensive oil on Jesus, an action that he defends. Notice what he says in verse 14:8, “She has done what she could; she has anointed my body in advance for burial.” Although the woman may not have fully understood everything about Jesus’ coming death, Jesus nonetheless sees her humility and devotion as fitting. She expressed more reverence for Jesus than anyone else in Simon’s house, and unknowingly expressed more appreciation and respect for his coming death than the disciples.

Reflection Questions:

  • The disciples walked with Jesus daily, yet the woman seems to respond with deeper reverence in this moment. What does this reveal about the difference between being familiar with Jesus and truly understanding His identity and mission?

  • Are there areas in your life where pride (like James and John) or misplaced zeal (like Peter) is shaping your response to Jesus?

  • What would a humble and reverent response to Christ’s sacrifice look like in your daily life?

  • Why was it necessary for Jesus to repeatedly foretell His death?

  • Are there areas where you need to be reminded about Jesus and his heart for you?
