Deuteronomy 15:1-8

Read Deuteronomy 15:1-8

Helpful Background Information:

  • Deuteronomy was written by Moses and was essentially a recap of how the Lord was at work in the Israelites’ lives and how they were supposed to live as God’s chosen people.

  • The settling of debts every seven years was called the LORD’s release. The standard was as Israel obeyed this command, there would never be a permanent under-class in Israel. Some might go through a bad period but would have the opportunity to rebuild their lives financially on a regular basis. This shows that life with God in the land, and the poor, is to be a constant embodiment of his kindness. We are not to withhold the same kindness we have received. When God blesses and forgives us, He does so in order that we would bless and forgive others as well, we were never meant to just keep it for ourselves.

  • In 1 John 3:17-18, John calls us to be compassionate to those in need and love in action and in truth. This call to care for God’s people in practically meeting their needs is not a new concept, as today’s passage is one of many that shows God’s heart for His people. God’s people have always been called to open-handed generosity and action as a way to display true love and faith.

Reflection Questions:

  • How does this passage embody what Jesus did for us? Jesus didn’t just let us off the hook every seven years and the rest of the time leave us to work, but paid the price of our debts and more once and for all! How does this change how I view and live out generosity?

  • Deuteronomy warns against letting future financial anxieties freeze our present generosity. What specific financial "what-ifs" or security fears most frequently tempt you to close your hand to someone in need? What truths does God say that combat these fears?

  • Do you tend to love more in action or in truth? What is the difference between the two, and how do they work together to holistically love others? How did Jesus live this out? What are some ways you can balance the two?
