1 John 3:11-3:24
Read 1 John 3:11-3:24
Helpful Background Information:
In this passage, Cain is referenced. Cain is one of the two first born sons of Adam and Eve, alongside his brother Abel. Their account is recorded in Genesis 4:1-16, as Cain, a worker of the ground, killed his brother Abel, a keeper of sheep. This murder is the first human death. Cain did this out of jealousy and resentment, as Abel was righteous and Cain was not. In the New Testament, Cain is displayed as a figure of spiritual failure.
John contrasts the way the world views Christians with the way Christians love their brothers and sisters. Like Cain, the world hates the righteous who live like Abel. But, as God is love, Christians are called to love as Jesus does, despite the hate of the world.
In verse 22, it is said that we will receive from God everything we ask. This is within the context of doing whatever God commands according to the Holy Spirit who indwells all believers. In this, it is implied that the will of Christians will be aligned with God’s will for His people. This is further explained in 1 John 5:14-15 as well. The role of the Christian in this is to ask God to align their hearts with His heart.
Reflection Questions:
Verse 15 describes how anyone who hates their brother or sister is a murderer like Cain. Read Matthew 5:21-22 as well. What does hate look like in your own life? How can you ask Jesus to change your heart to be loving instead?
How is the love described in verses 16-18 different from the love our culture pushes for? What does this passage tell you about sacrificial love? How can you seek to express the love displayed in this passage?
In verses 21-24, John talks about keeping God’s commands and pleasing Him. In what areas of your life are you dissatisfied with God’s care and deliverance? How can your heart change by living in Him (verses 23-24)?
