Helpful Background Information:
There are many similarities between the Gospel of John and the letters of John. A recurring principle of not only John’s writings, but also the overall biblical narrative, is the commandment to love. Throughout all Scripture, God commands us to love Him with all our heart, soul and strength (Deut. 6:5) and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Lev 19:18).
This passage echoes these commands, reflecting Christ’s love in every area of life. Jesus isn’t calling you to do something he has not already done/is doing. He goes before you, and leads by example through his joyful obedience and submission to the Father. We are to echo this very nature of Christ.
Jesus says “If you love me, you will keep my commands.” (John 14:15). Knowing and loving Jesus is directly related to our submission/obedience to what he commands us to do. Jesus does not command us to feel a certain way; he commands us to love one another through our actions. To love others is to keep his commands, which is evidence that you belong to Him. This is only possible through the work of the Holy Spirit indwelling inside of us!
Reflection Questions:
Verse 9 (and the verses prior) talk about remaining in Christ’s love through keeping his commands. What does it mean to remain? What makes it hard to remain in His love? What does it look like practically to remain in Him? Why is it important we remain in Him?
What does fruit look like in the life of a believer? (See Galatians 5:22-23.) Is this fruit evident in your life? In John 15:16 Jesus says that He chose us and appointed us to go and bear fruit. What specific fruit has abiding in Jesus produced in your life lately?
Jesus says in verse 13 that the greatest love is to lay down one's life for one's friends. While most of us won't be called to physically die for someone, what are the smaller, daily ways you can "lay down your life" (your time, comfort, preferences, or rights) for others? Is there someone in your life right now whom God is calling you to love sacrificially, even if it feels difficult or undeserved?
