2 Chronicles 34-35

Read 2 Chronicles 34-35

Helpful Background Information:

  • Josiah became king of Judah at just eight years old. Despite the fact that the vast majority of his ancestors were rebellious, we’re told that Josiah actually committed himself to the LORD at an early age. His reign as king was marked by purging the land of idols, repairing the Temple, rediscovering the Book of the Law, and restoring the Passover celebration.

  • By the time Josiah became king, the rebellion and sin in the land was so severe that consequences were unavoidable. In this case, God’s judgment would come upon the people through exile in Babylon. Even so, Josiah knew that repentance and reform were the right things to do with the time that was left.

  • His life really gives us a great example of how generational cycles of sin can be broken, and how God preserved a remnant from among His people to be redeemed by His Son Jesus, who entered the world through the family line of Josiah.

Reflection Questions:

  • Josiah inherited a nation shaped by generations of rebellion, yet he chose a different path. What unhealthy patterns, assumptions, or habits have you inherited, and how might God be calling you to break them?

  • The king understood that obedience was worthwhile even when immediate results were limited. Where might God be calling you to pursue faithfulness regardless of the outcome?

  • Josiah could lead reforms, but he could not fully remove the sinful hearts of God's people. How does this highlight our need for the transforming work of Christ?
