Deuteronomy 7:1-5

Read Deuteronomy 7:1-5

Helpful Background Information:

  • Deuteronomy 7:1–5 takes place as Moses is preparing Israel to enter the Promised Land. God warns Israel not to make covenants with the nations living there and not to intermarry with them. This was not because God hated people from other nations. However, these nations worshiped false gods, and if Israel joined themselves to them, their hearts would be pulled away from the LORD. Samson was set apart for God from birth, but he repeatedly pursued Philistine women and ignored the danger of being closely tied to people who worshipped false gods. God’s commands were meant to protect His people from compromise, but Samson rejected God's wisdom and paid the price for it.
