Matthew 7:1-5

Read Matthew 7:1-5

Helpful Background Information:

  • In Matthew 7:1–5, Jesus warns against judging others with a self-righteous attitude. His words are not a call to ignore sin altogether but a command to examine ourselves first. In the context of marriage, it’s easy to see our spouse’s sins while excusing our own. However, Jesus shows how backwards that perspective can be. Before addressing another person’s sin, we must first deal honestly with our own. When we do, we are better equipped to help others in humility and grace. When we apply this teaching in our homes and in all our relationships, we stop seeing the people around us as the enemy and start seeing sin as the real problem.

Reflection Questions:

  • Jesus warns, “Judge not, that you be not judged” (v. 1). What kind of judgment is He warning against, and how is that different from loving correction?

  • Before addressing sin in another person, what steps can you take to look honestly at your own heart first?

  • How does remembering the gospel (your own forgiveness in Christ) shape the way you confront or respond to sin in marriage?

  • How should a believer respond if they are seeking to repent and reconcile, but their spouse is not yet willing?
