Joshua 5:13-15

Read Joshua 5:13-15

Helpful Background Information:

  • In Daniel 10, the curtain is pulled back to reveal the spiritual realities that stand behind the clashes for power on earth. To better understand the cosmic war in this chapter, we have to situate it within the larger story of cosmic warfare in the Old Testament. Time after time in the biblical story, readers find Yahweh described as a divine warrior—one who fights on His people’s behalf to bring them victory. Israel also fights, but they are well aware that their success isn’t a result of their own power or strategies. Rather, their victory comes as a result of the LORD of hosts fighting for them.

  • In Joshua 5, we see this happening at the battle of Jericho. As the Israelites are preparing, Joshua sees a man standing in front of him with a sword in hand (v.13a). He asks the man, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” (v.13b). The man replies, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the LORD” (v.14a). Immediately, Joshua falls on his face in this holy encounter (vv.14b-15). Though the concentration in Joshua 5 was on the earthly aspects of the historical battle, there was no question that a heavenly warrior would be the one carrying them to victory as the walls of Jericho fell.

  • In Daniel 10, not only are the heavenly powers supporting Israel revealed, but also the spiritual powers on the other side. In the cosmic war described in Daniel, the battle is not simply waged against the flesh and blood enemies of God’s people, but against the spiritual powers that accompany them.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does God bring about victory for His people in Joshua? How does He bring about victory for His people today? List some similarities and differences.

  2. In Joshua, the people recognized that God was the one winning their battles, as He made good on His promises. What would it look like for you to depend on God for victory over specific sins in your life?

  3. Having the support of the commander of the army of the LORD deeply encouraged the people of Israel. As a believer, how does having the Lord on your side affect the way you face your challenges? Give an example.
