Daniel 10

Read Daniel 10

Helpful Background Information:

  • Daniel 10 describes a powerful spiritual experience that Daniel had after humbling himself and praying for three weeks. During that time, Daniel fasted from rich foods and sought understanding from God. In response, God sent him a vision to reveal future events. However, before Daniel could receive this vision, he needed to be spiritually prepared. This preparation included two dramatic encounters. First, Daniel saw “a certain man dressed in linen” with a dazzling, radiant appearance (vv. 4–9). Based on descriptions like Revelation 1, we believe this figure is Jesus Christ appearing in a pre-incarnate form. The vision of Jesus left Daniel physically overwhelmed and without strength, so Daniel fainted.

  • After that encounter, Daniel was touched and strengthened by a different figure, an angel. This angel explained that he had been delayed for twenty-one days by spiritual opposition, described as the “prince of the kingdom of Persia.”  The angel’s encouragement and explanation prepared Daniel to receive the prophetic vision found in Daniel 11 & 12.

Reflection Questions:

  • Daniel fasted and prayed for three weeks before receiving an answer. What role do prayer and fasting play in preparing your heart for spiritual battles? (v. 12)

  • The angel mentioned being delayed by the “prince of Persia.” How does this shape your understanding of the reality and seriousness of spiritual warfare?

  • Daniel felt physically weak after seeing Jesus. Why might God sometimes allow weakness during spiritual warfare before providing strength?

  • The angel came to strengthen Daniel. Who in your life might God be calling you to encourage as they face their own spiritual struggles?
