Exodus 1:8
Read Exodus 1:8
As the book of Exodus begins, readers are told that a new king was ruling over Egypt—one “who did not know Joseph” (Exodus 1:8). In prior days, Joseph enjoyed favor in the sight of the king (Genesis 41:37-45). God granted Joseph the ability to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, resulting in his promotion to one of the highest positions of authority in the land. As long as Joseph was in power, the children of Israel had security in the land of Egypt. When a new pharaoh arose, however, Joseph was forgotten, and the people were enslaved.
Daniel 5 begins with a new king ruling over Babylon—one who did not know Daniel (Daniel 5:10-11). After King Belshazzar received a message that neither he nor any of his wise men could understand, they were encouraged to call upon a man named Daniel (5:12). They heard that, in the days of Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel displayed wisdom like no other. He had an ability to interpret dreams that landed him in one of the highest positions of authority in the land (5:11). Over time, however, Daniel had been forgotten along with his people in exile.
Throughout history, the story of the Exodus has been central to Jewish self-understanding. The hope of God’s covenant people was rooted in the story of how the LORD fulfilled His promise and saved their ancestors from the hand of a foreign oppressor. Though many of the names and faces are different in Daniel’s day, the pattern of the story seems to remain the same. Readers are reminded that kings and kingdoms will continue to rise and fall, but “the Most High God” Himself ultimately rules and reigns on the throne of an unshakable and everlasting kingdom (5:21).
Reflection Questions:
In times of affliction, believers have often looked back at stories of God’s past faithfulness to find present hope. When you look at how God has delivered His people throughout history, what common patterns do you notice?
Despite the present circumstances for Daniel and the exiles, God was still in control. What present circumstances tempt you to question God’s control? Where do you see evidence of His sovereignty?
In your own story, can you remember some of the specific enslaving sins that the Lord saved you from? How has healing come about?
