Mark 14:12-26
Read Mark 14:12-26
Helpful Background Information:
Mark 14:12–26 takes place during the Passover. The focus shifts from the plotting against Jesus to the meal He shares with His disciples. The Passover meal followed a meaningful pattern that retold how God rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt. Elements like the lamb, the bread, and the cups of wine all pointed back to that story of deliverance.
Jesus sends two disciples ahead to prepare the meal, which would have required securing a suitable room in crowded Jerusalem and making sure all the Passover elements were ready. Jesus’s “mini prophecy” of directing his disciples to a man who owned the house shows his sovereignty and intentionality in the events unfolding. During the meal, Jesus makes a shocking announcement that one of the Twelve will betray Him. This evokes grief and protest in the disciples.
In the middle of this traditional meal, Jesus transforms the Passover of the Old Covenant into the Lord’s Supper of the New Covenant. He takes the bread and the cup, teaching that these represent His own body and blood, pointing ahead to His death. What had always been a remembrance of God’s past rescue in the Exodus now becomes a remembrance of the new, better rescue Jesus is about to accomplish through his death on the cross.
Reflection Questions:
What do the bread and the cup represent, and why is that significant? How does this deepen your reverence for the Lord’s Supper?
How does this passage demonstrate both Jesus’ control and His surrender to the Father’s will at the same time?
Why is the idea of a “covenant” important in understanding what Jesus is doing here? How does this deepen your security in Christ?
