Proverbs 6:16-19
Read Proverbs 6:16-19; James 4:6
Helpful Background Information:
James and Proverbs share the characteristic of being very practical books.
James is considered among the “general” epistles, due to the fact that it is not written to a specific church or person. Rather, this book was written most specifically to the Jews who had believed in Christ. James writes this letter to be a guide for obedience to the Lord—summarizing this in 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
James 4 is when the Apostle warns against having corrupt desires and walking in the ways of the worldly people.
Proverbs 6 follows the normal habit of the rest of the book in that it gives wisdom over a broad span of topics that are seemingly unrelated.
Reflection Questions:
How do you see these verses in James 4 and Proverbs 6 relating to Daniel 4?
Where do you see King Nebuchadnezzar displaying pride in Daniel 4?
Amongst the things the author of Proverbs lists that God hates, the first quality listed is pride (aka “haughty eyes”). Why is this so significant?
Read also Romans 12:3. Where are places where you see the struggle of viewing yourself “more highly than you ought?”
When have you seen God bless you when you were truly humble? (Note: these moments often come in moments when we realize our deeply prideful habits, and humble ourselves as a result of that realization).
Set a timer on your phone for 10 minutes and spend this time in prayer. Pray the Lord would: reveal to you places in your life and heart where there is pride, that He would purge it out, and for humility.
