Daniel 4
Read Daniel 4
Helpful Background Information:
Daniel 4 is written from the perspective of the pagan king Nebuchadnezzar. The ruler of Babylon tells the story of how God humbled him. He begins the chapter with praise, but the path to that praise was not easy. God gave him a disturbing dream about a mighty tree being chopped down. The tree represented Nebuchadnezzar himself. Daniel interpreted the dream honestly, warning the king that unless he repented and turned from pride, he would be humbled. For a time, Nebuchadnezzar ignored the warning. A year later, he was walking in his palace, boasting about his greatness, when God suddenly judged him. He lost his sanity and lived like an animal for “seven times” (most likely seven years). After his time of humiliation, Nebuchadnezzar finally lifted his eyes to heaven and praised the Most High. His reason returned, his kingdom was restored, and he publicly confessed that God’s rule is everlasting.
