Revelation 19:11-21

Read Revelation 19:11-21

Helpful Background Information:

  • Revelation 19:11-21 describes the future return of Jesus Christ. This moment fulfills the hope Daniel saw in chapter 2: the final kingdom is set up by God, crushes all human empires, and lasts forever. Throughout history, powerful nations have risen and fallen, including Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, and others, which will ultimately culminate in an empire ruled by “the beast.” But Jesus will return and bring an end to all wicked rule. He will strike down the beast and the false prophet and throw them into the lake of fire. Corrupt governments, false religions, or sinful people will no longer rule the earth. Instead, Jesus will govern the universe with a perfect, righteous, and everlasting rule.

Reflection Questions:

  • Jesus comes not just to save, but also to judge and make war in righteousness. How is this different from the cultural view of Jesus?

  • How does this future vision of Jesus as a conquering King affect the way you respond to evil and injustice in the world today?

  • If Jesus were to return today, what in your life would you want to change? What would you be excited to see Him set right?
