Read Isaiah 46

Helpful Background Information:  

  • Isaiah often proclaims the coming of the Messiah. 

  • In the first 40 chapters of Isaiah, the primary theme is an indictment against the Israelites for their sin and idolatry against the Lord. 

  • Additionally, the primary theme of chapters 40-48 is a case for the loving sovereignty of Yahweh. Isaiah points to the Lord’s ability to say beforehand what He will do and then to accomplish what He said. He then challenges the false gods to do the same. Chapter 46 follows this theme of comparing Yahweh to false gods.

  • What are some primary ways God contrasts Himself to these idols in these verses? 

  • Read Daniel 2:17-30. Where do you see connections between this passage and Isaiah 46? 

  • Where in your life are you tempted to trust in things you can control instead of God's plan?

  • What are the idols in your heart that you go to, depend on, or escape to instead of going to the Lord? 

    • Read Mark 8:34. 

    • In light of Mark 8:34, how can you respond in obedience to Jesus’s call relating to your idols?
