2 Chronicles 36:1-21

Read 2 Chronicles 36:1-21

Helpful Background Information:

  • 1 and 2 Chronicles were originally written as one scroll. These books provide a historical account of God’s people and how He has been present for them over time; they are a retelling of the past to inspire hope in God’s people.

  • Much of the information in Chronicles can also be read in 1-2 Samuel and 1-2 Kings.

  • One of the main themes of 1-2 Chronicles is the centrality and importance of Temple worship. This was where the people of God worshipped Him and where the presence of God dwelt. The utter destruction of the temple that we read about in this passage horrified the people.

  • In 2 Chronicles 36, we see the first 14 verses giving a historical account of God's people and the succession of kings. After this, in verses 15-21, the author changes gears and gives commentary from what happened to why it happened.

  • The major and minor prophets also describe the reason for God’s judgment. God is especially upset with their child sacrifice and oppression of the poor and vulnerable.

Reflection Questions:

  • How does this passage show: (write down the answers)

  1. God’s justice?

  2. God’s patience?

  3. God’s grace?

  • In our day and age, it is often tough to stomach that God, who is the source of all love and is incredibly loving Himself, also brings down justice. Why was it just that God brought down justice on His people? How is God’s justice a comfort to you?

  • What patterns of disobedience do you see among the final kings of Judah? Where do you see these patterns in your own life and those around you?

  • Jesus took on the full wrath of God so that those who are in Christ do not have to worry about His wrath. Yet, Hebrews 12:6 tells us that “the Lord disciplines the one He loves.” God, in His incredible grace, wisdom, and kindness, lovingly disciplines us for our good and His glory. What does this look like in your life? How can you learn to appreciate God disciplining you?
