Mark 7:24-37

Read Mark 7:24-37

Helpful Background Information:

  • After his firm rebuke of the Pharisees, Jesus and his disciples depart for the region of Tyre, north of Galilee, and after this to the region of the Decapolis to the east. These areas would have been mostly populated by Gentiles (non-Jews). During his time in Tyre, Jesus performed two miracles: the healing of the Gentile woman’s daughter (Mark 7:24-29). Later in the Decapolis, Jesus heals the deaf man (v. 31-37).

  • Although this is a rather small section in Mark’s gospel, its placement after Jesus’ condemnation of the Pharisees has notable theological importance. The faith of the Gentile woman and of the men in the Decapolis must be contrasted with the rejection of Christ by the Pharisees. The Pharisees, who were students of the Old Testament, should’ve recognized who Jesus was; and in response, humbled themselves before him and gratefully received him as their Lord. They failed to do this, and it is ironically the Gentiles - a group who mostly did not know the Old Testament’s messianic promises -  who have faith in him and humbly relied upon his mercy.

Reflection Questions:

  • The Gentile woman and the men in the Decapolis approached Jesus with humility and persistence. What does her example teach us about how we should approach God in prayer? (See also Luke 18:1-13, Philippians 4:6, and Hebrews 4:16)

  • The Pharisees had religious knowledge but lacked faith and humility. How should this fact be a warning to us? How could this apply to you specifically?

  • Jesus traveled to Gentile regions and performed miracles there. What does this tell us about the reach of the gospel and the heart of Christ? (See also Matthew 28:16-20)
