1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Helpful Background Information:

  • In 1 Corinthians 9:19–23, Paul talks about how he adapts himself to different kinds of people so that he can share the gospel with them more effectively. Even though Paul is free (he doesn’t owe anyone anything), he willingly becomes a servant to others. His goal is simple: to win as many people as possible to Christ.

  • This passage shows us a model for what it looks like to live on mission for our communities. Paul is willing to give up preferences to remove barriers between people and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He does not change the message of the gospel, but he is willing to change his method of “preaching” so that different audiences can hear and understand the good news.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Paul’s life goal was to “win” people to Christ. In your best moments, what is your life’s goal? What about your worst moments?

  2. Paul changed his approach depending on who he was with. How can you relate better to people who are different from you without compromising your faith?

  3. What personal preferences or comforts might God be asking you to let go of for the sake of reaching others?

  4. Paul says he became “all things to all people.” How can you avoid being fake while still being flexible in how you relate to others?
