Philippians 2:1-11
Read Philippians 2:1-11
Helpful Background Information:
In Mark 9:30-32, Jesus Christ makes clear what true greatness in his kingdom consists of: serving others. Such humility is one of the defining hallmarks of the Christian life, and the command to be humble is found everywhere in Scripture.
One of the more famous passages of humility is found in Philippians 2:1-11. The Apostle Paul urges believers to live in unity through humility and shared purpose. It teaches that instead of acting out of selfish ambition or pride, people should value others above themselves.
To make his call to humility even stronger, Paul points the Philippians to the clearest and chief example of humility - the Lord Jesus Christ himself. Verses 5-11 are often referred to as the “Christ-hymn”, as it is believed to be an early hymn, which the Philippians were likely familiar with!
