Read Genesis 1:1-31

Helpful Background Information: 

• Genesis 1 holds the creation account for how God created the heavens and the earth. In Genesis 1, there is a clear statement that both God and the Holy Spirit are there at creation. However, it is passages like John 1:1-18 and Colossians 1:15-20 that make it clear that Jesus had a vital role in creation. 

• When God created mankind, Genesis 1:26-27, He made them in His own image and likeness. His image and likeness relates to humanity’s relational capacity, authority, and dignity, as opposed to physical form. Mankind is set apart from animals through relational capacity because we are able to relate with one another and have a relationship with God. Similarly, humanity was given authority and dignity as rulers and caretakers of God’s creation. 

• There are many repeated words and phrases in Genesis 1, take note of these and their significance to the text as a whole.

• How does reading this passage through the lens of Jesus give you insight into the creation account? How can you praise God for this?

• What is the significance of being made in the image of God? What gifts and responsibilities come with being made in God’s image?

• It is stated that mankind was made on the sixth day. Read Job 38:4-7. Why is it significant that no man was there when God did this? What does that show about His holiness and sovereignty?
