Read Philippians 1:3-11

Helpful Background Information: 

• Philippians was written by Paul from prison to the church of Philippi. The Philippian church has partnered with Paul from the beginning, where we see him plant the church in Acts 16. 

• Partnership in the gospel goes beyond shared interests. They weren't necessarily connected by age, background, occupation, culture, interest, etc. They were connected by Jesus. The gospel created a bond deeper than their differences. The gospel doesn't erase our differences. It gives us something deeper than our differences. This partnership is rooted in not just what we do, but who we are as believers united in Christ. 

• Verse 6 expresses confidence that it is the Lord who began a good work in you, and it is God who will carry it to completion. He is the one that initiates, sustains, and completes his mission through us, his faithful stewards. Spiritual growth is a daily walk in relationship with the Lord, not a one and done deal. 

Reflection Questions: 

• What does it mean to be in partnership with others in the gospel? What are some tangible ways you could partner with someone in the gospel today? What existing partnerships are you a part of, and how can those be strengthened in Christ today? 

• Paul thanks the Lord with great joy for the Philippians and their partnership. Who in your life are you thankful for? Pray to the Lord in joy and gratitude for them!

• Why is it important that love is grown in knowledge and discernment? How does this knowledge/discernment inform us on how we love others? What other influences do we tend to build our definition of love on?
