Helpful Background Information: 

• God created mankind to be in a relationship with Him. As we read in Genesis 3, sin separates us from God. However, in God’s plan of redemption and restoration to His people, God came near to the Israelite people through the Tabernacle. This was the first physical dwelling place that God had His people make, and was intended to be temporary. Along with the Tabernacle, God gave Moses instructions on how to worship in this context. Those instructions were written for the Levitical priests, hinting at the name of the book, Leviticus. 

• Through the Old Testament, there was only one day of the year when someone was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place. This was the Day of Atonement. This was the day when the people were to be made right with God through the sacrifice Aaron would make. 

• As you read, pay attention to the necessity for cleanliness that was required by God for the worship of Him.

Reflection Questions: 

• As you read, take note of how much purification was required from God for the Day of Atonement. What does this show about His Holiness?

• Review Hebrews 10:19-25. How does the Leviticus passage point forward to Jesus? How has Jesus performed the roles of both High Priest and as a sacrifice? How is this important for your own life?

• Because of Jesus’ work for the sake of our entrance into the presence of God, all believers have access to the Father. Who can you invite into a relationship with God?
