Helpful Background Information: 

• The events in this story happen in Jerusalem, a few months after Jesus’ resurrection, ascension and Pentecost. The church is still entirely Jewish, meeting daily in the temple and growing rapidly. 

• The Sanhedrin was the ruling council of Jewish leaders, including the elders and scribes. Some other key characters in this story are the Sadducees: a sect of Judaism known for their denial of the resurrection/afterlife; Annas: a former high priest who still held significant influence; and Caiaphas: the acting high priest during this time, son-in-law of Annas, and played a role in Jesus’ trial.

• Peter refers to Psalm 118:22 when facing the Sanhedrin (v11). In the believers’ prayer, they reference Psalm 2 (in v25-26), praying for boldness from the Lord.

Reflection Questions: 

• Notice that Peter, John, and the other believers prayed for boldness in the midst of their opposition rather than praying for their hard circumstances to disappear. This is only possible through the empowering Holy Spirit. What situation in your life do you need to ask the Holy Spirit to empower you with boldness to proclaim truth rather than being driven by fear? What would that look like? 

• Everyone who witnessed this miracle were amazed because Peter and John were ordinary people. Compared to the powerful Sanhedrin, they truly were nobodies, yet they were the ones advancing the Kingdom. What makes Peter and John’s message different from the Jewish leaders? Do you believe that God can use you no matter your status, ability, or intelligence? What excuses do you find yourself giving to get out of being bold for His Kingdom? 

• Most of us today don’t face the level of persecution and opposition that the early church did. How can you still boldly proclaim truth in your circumstances, even if they aren’t directly oppressive? Where in your life do you tend to shy away from proclaiming God’s Word, and why?
