2 Timothy 3:1-4:5
Read 2 Timothy 3:1-4:5
Helpful Background Information:
Paul’s second letter to Timothy was written near the end of Paul’s life, while he was imprisoned and facing death. Timothy was a younger pastor whom Paul had discipled and trusted deeply. In 2 Timothy 3, Paul warns him that difficult times will come and that people will increasingly reject the truth, pursue sinful desires, and gather around teachers who tell them what they want to hear. In contrast, Timothy is told to continue in what he has learned. Paul points him back to the Scriptures, which are able to make a person “wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” That is why Paul tells Timothy in chapter 4 to “preach the word.” A healthy Christian community cannot be built just around shared interests, personalities, or preferences. It must be continually formed by hearing, believing, obeying, and teaching the Word of God.

According to 3:15, what is the ultimate purpose of Scripture?
Why might a community be tempted to avoid parts of Scripture?
