Helpful Background Information:
Moses had led Israel out of Egypt and into the wilderness. At the foot of Mount Sinai, they built the tabernacle to worship God. While they waited for orders to march toward the promised land, God gave these instructions so the Levite priests could properly lead the people in worship. Leviticus provides instructions for worship and community life that sets Israel apart.
The year of Jubilee comes from the Hebrew word for a ram or ram’s horn, signifying celebration. Every 50th year, It was announced by the sounding of the ram’s horn which canceled debts, liberated slaves and indentured servants, and land was returned to its original owners. It was designed to prevent the permanent impoverishment of individuals and families by restoring land, giving them a chance to recover.
This chapter emphasizes compassion and support for the poor, especially vv35-37. These verses challenge us to extend kindness and support to those in need, reflecting God's heart for the vulnerable. The support God calls us to give to others isn’t only when it's convenient or easy, or not just to those we like, but a call to help those in need when they need it, and to give freely and graciously. From this that we can see all along God has called His people to be generous when anyone in the covenant community had a need.
Reflection Questions:
With the Sabbath year and Year of Jubilee came a lot of trust in the Lord’s provision. What areas of your life is the Lord asking you to rest and trust that he will provide?
God says to not cheat anyone because of your fear of the Lord in verse 17. How does your “fear of God” directly impact the way you view and treat people, as well as your willingness to help them? How does God’s heart for the poor and vulnerable align or misalign with the way you treat others?
Who is someone in your life that has a need that you could show the love and compassion of Christ to by supporting them in that need? How can you offer "interest free” (service without expecting anything in return) support to them this week?
