Proverbs 27:17
Read Proverbs 27:17
Helpful Background Information:
For the past couple of days, we have examined how marriage is a covenant unto Christlikeness; each partner plays a role in sanctifying the other. The husband loves his wife to encourage her to walk closely with God, and vice versa. The result is that both spouses, both individually and collectively, become more holy over time as faith in Christ grows stronger, sin is repented of, and obedience to God takes center stage.
In our Proverb for the day, Solomon gives a great visual image of what Christ-loving spouses do for one another. Iron sharpens iron! In Hebrew, the original language of the Proverbs, this proverb literally reads, “Iron against iron sharpens, and man sharpens the face of his friend.” The word for face equates to personality, the idea being that as you interact with a godly person (who both encourages and corrects), you are more equipped to handle challenges, your heart and mind are refined to live well for the Lord!
And while this Proverb certainly applies to marriage, we must remember that the context is very broad. This could apply to godly friendships, siblings, mentors, interactions with parents, fellow church-members, and so much more. When two Christians are in fellowship, no matter the stage or season of life, they can sharpen each other unto Christlikeness!
Reflection Questions:
How does understanding marriage (or friendship) as a sanctifying relationship change the way we view conflict or correction within it?
Who in your life has been a source of spiritual sharpening — someone who lovingly challenges, corrects, or encourages you toward Christlikeness? How can you invite others to speak truth into your life more freely?
What is one practical way you can intentionally “sharpen” someone in your life this week — through encouragement, accountability, or prayer?
