Hebrews 4:14-16
Read Hebrews 4:14-16
Helpful Background Information:
In Mark 15:37-38, we see Jesus breathe his last, and the temple curtain is torn in two. This tearing is full of theological significance and symbolism, and is worthy of our meditation. The curtain here is referring to the massive curtain separating the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple sanctuary.
The Holy of Holies was the most sacred area of the temple, which was believed to contain the very presence of God. According to the Old Testament, the high priest of Israel was to enter the Holy of Holies once a year on the Day of Atonement to make atonement for the sins of Israel.
Hence, the theological symbolism is straightforward. The tearing of the curtain from top to bottom signified God’s action in rendering the temple and the Old Covenant as fulfilled in Christ. No longer is the temple needed; the way to God’s presence is now opened due to the death of his Son. Likewise, no more animal sacrifices are necessary, as Jesus Christ is the perfect once-for-all sacrifice for the sins of God’s people.
We see this exact point made in our passage from Hebrews. Jesus Christ is our great high priest who has made intercession for us; he has done the work necessary to make us righteous before the Living God. Because of this, believers can boldly and confidently come into the presence of God - not just once a year, but anytime, and any day. All praise be to Christ!
