James 1:22-27

Read James 1:22-27

Helpful Background Information:

  • Throughout the book of James, the assumption is that those who call themselves Christians ought to act like it. One of the first things James addresses in his letter is the essential connection between hearing and doing. He says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (v.22). James goes on to say that you can put on all sorts of religious appearances but still lack what God is actually looking for (v.26). The kind of religion God is looking for, according to James, is largely characterized by care for “orphans and widows in their distress” (v.27).

  • This helps us understand Jesus’ concern with the scribes in Mark 12, who He says, “devour widows’ houses,” among other things (vv.38-40). Despite all the different ways that the scribes appeared to be religious, Jesus knew that they were doing it all “just for show” (v.40). Jesus, then, contrasts their corruption with the example of a generous widow who gave generously out of her poverty (vv.41-44). Ironically, the widow was willingly doing the very thing the scribes should have been doing for her.

Reflection Questions:

  • Of all people, the scribes who Jesus interacted with would have been most familiar with God’s Word. Even so, they failed to reflect God’s priorities in their behavior. How might this disconnect have come about?

  • In what areas do you find it most difficult to bridge the gap between what God commands and how you respond?

  • Do you personally know anyone who is a widow or an orphan? If so, what is one tangible way you could extend the love of Christ to them this week? If not, what steps could you take to get to know the people who are most vulnerable in your community?
