Mark 12:35-37

Read Mark 12:35-37

Helpful Background Information:

  • In Mark 12:35–37, Jesus is still teaching publicly in the temple courts, after having answered all of the questions of the religious leaders (see v13–34) Jesus asks them a question in return. The scribes were right to say the Messiah would be the “Son of David.” God promised David that a future king from his line would reign (that expectation runs all through the Old Testament). But Jesus points out that the Bible also says the messiah will be someone bigger than “David’s descendant.” He quotes Psalm 110:1, and He reminds everyone that David wrote it “by the Holy Spirit.” David says, “The LORD said to my Lord…” In other words, David calls the Messiah his Lord, not just his future grandson. With this question, Jesus calls these religious leaders to look at themselves and ask whether they really know who the Messiah is.

Reflection Questions:

  • If Jesus is not only David’s Son but also David’s Lord, what does that require from you personally?

  • Jesus points to the Messiah being seated at God’s “right hand.” Why does that matter?

  • Where do you feel tension between Jesus as Savior (who helps you) and Jesus as Lord (who rules you)? What’s one practical way you can submit that area to Him this week?
